You cannot manage what you do not measure, and memory is a poor measure of gambling spend. Wins are recalled vividly, losses are blurred, and the total drifts. A tracker corrects this with arithmetic. It need not be elaborate: a notes app or a simple spreadsheet is enough. This article describes what to record, how to calculate net spend and how to use the numbers to keep a monthly cap.

What to record

Keep the list short, so that you will actually use it. Five fields cover almost everything.

The net figure

Net result for a session is amount taken out minus amount put in. Add the sessions over a month for the monthly net. A negative number is normal, since the house has an edge, and it is the price of entertainment. The point of calculating it is to compare it with what you decided the entertainment was worth.

If the net exceeds the cap you set, stop for the rest of the month. This is the rule that gives the tracker teeth: a number without a consequence is only a diary.

Setting the cap

Choose the monthly cap from income and fixed costs, not from desire. The cap is an amount that you could lose entirely without affecting rent, food, family obligations or savings. A common mistake is setting a cap by reference to what you hope to win. Write the cap at the top of the tracker, where you will see it each time you update.

Using the data

After three months you have something useful: your actual cost of play, your most expensive days and your mood patterns. Look for these signals.

  • Sessions that run longer than planned.
  • Deposits made on the same day as a loss.
  • Mood notes such as stressed or angry before a session.
  • A rising monthly total, even with the cap intact.

Where to get a record of the account side

The brand site keeps its own history of transactions in the cashier. Compare it with your tracker monthly; any gap is a sign that a session was missed. For the cashier, see the deposit guide. If you find the numbers uncomfortable, read how to take a proper break and the responsible gambling page.

Do not hide the tracker. If a trusted person can see it, even better; accountability turns a private number into a shared one.

Here is a worked month, using invented numbers. In week one you put in 500 and take out 300, for a net of minus 200. In week two you put in 300 and take out 0, net minus 300. In week three nothing is staked. In week four you put in 400 and take out 600, net plus 200. The monthly net is minus 300. If your cap is 1,000, you are comfortably inside it; if your cap was 250, you should stop and review. The arithmetic is trivial, and that is exactly why it works.

Notice what the weekly view reveals. Week two was a loss day with no cash out, and week four had a gain. Without the log, many people would remember week four most and conclude that the month was fine. The log keeps the record honest.

Add a second review once a quarter: look at minutes played alongside net result. If time is rising while the net stays negative, that is a signal that gambling is taking space in your life even if money looks controlled.

Share the cap, not just the log, with someone you trust, and agree in advance what happens when it is reached. A decision made in advance with another person is much harder to undo in the heat of a session.

Procedure

Start a tracker in 3 steps

  1. 1
    Create the sheet

Make five columns: date, put in, taken out, minutes, mood.

  2. 2
    Set the cap

Write a monthly cap you could lose without affecting essentials.

  3. 3
    Update straight after

Record each session right after it ends, then total the month.

Frequently asked

How detailed should the tracker be?

Detailed enough to use. Five fields are sufficient, and a longer list tends to be abandoned.

What if I forget a session?

Estimate it from the cashier history on the brand site and mark it as estimated.

What should the cap be?

An amount you could lose completely without affecting essentials like rent and food.

Is a negative net a problem?

It is expected, since the house has an edge. It becomes a problem if it exceeds your cap.

Can the tracker be shared?

Yes, and sharing with a trusted person adds accountability.
