Baccarat looks formal, but the rules are mechanical and the player makes only one decision per round: where to place the bet. This guide sets out card values, the drawing logic, the three main bets and the practical checks to make before sitting at a live table in the GT99 lobby. Table availability and limits are shown inside the lobby, so none are quoted here.
Card values and scoring
Each hand is scored by adding card values and keeping only the last digit. An ace is worth one point, the twos to nines are worth their printed number, and tens plus court cards add nothing. A hand of seven and eight totals fifteen, which scores five. The highest possible score is nine.
Why the last digit only? It keeps every hand between zero and nine, so two hands can be compared at once without calculation. The dealer announces totals, and you never need to compute them yourself, but knowing the method lets you follow what is happening.
How the third card is decided
Both sides receive two cards. If either has eight or nine, that is a natural and the round ends. Otherwise a fixed table decides whether a third card is drawn. The player hand draws on totals up to five and stands on six or seven. The banker rule depends on the banker total and, in some cases, the player third card.
You do not choose any of this. The drawing rules are fixed, which is why baccarat has no decision tree. The one pattern worth noting is that the fixed rules slightly favour the banker side, which is why that bet usually carries a commission.
The three main bets
Each bet has a different payout and a different edge.
| Bet | Wins when | Payout idea | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Player | Player hand scores higher | Even money | Low house edge |
| Banker | Banker hand scores higher | Even money minus commission | Lowest edge, commission applies |
| Tie | Both hands score the same | Much higher payout | Highest edge, rare outcome |
Table etiquette and the roadmaps
Live tables display scoreboards showing previous results as columns of symbols. They record the past and nothing more. Each round is independent because the cards are shuffled by rules that do not read the board. See gambling myths, tested against the maths for why patterns on a board do not predict the next hand.
Betting limits and side bets differ by table. Open a table and read the limits displayed in the table header before staking, and confirm how the banker commission is applied.
Practical advice
Choose a table whose minimum fits your budget, so that a normal losing run does not end the session within a few hands. Set a stop point. If you want to compare with a game that has a faster pace and more bet variety, read roulette or dragon tiger, the latter being a simpler cousin of baccarat. All live games are listed in the live casino hub.
