Blackjack is the live table game where your choices matter most. A sound basic approach reduces the house edge compared with random play, but only if you know the rules at your particular table. This guide covers card values, the flow of a round, the main decisions and what to read in the GT99 live lobby before sitting down.
Card values and the goal
Cards two to ten count face value, picture cards count ten, and an ace counts one or eleven, whichever helps the hand. The target is to beat the dealer without exceeding 21. Exceeding is called a bust and loses immediately, even if the dealer later busts as well.
This ordering is the source of the dealer advantage: you act first, so you can bust before the dealer plays. Everything in basic decisions is about managing that disadvantage.
The flow of a round
A round runs in a fixed order.
- You place a bet before cards are dealt.
- You and the dealer receive two cards; one dealer card is face up.
- You choose actions in turn: hit, stand, double or split, and sometimes surrender or insurance.
- The dealer reveals the hidden card and draws according to a fixed rule, commonly standing on seventeen.
- Hands are compared and bets are paid, typically even money, with a higher payout for a natural blackjack.
The four decisions
Each action has a purpose and a cost.
| Action | What it does | When it tends to be used |
|---|---|---|
| Hit | Take another card | Low totals |
| Stand | Keep the hand | High totals, or dealer weak |
| Double | Double the bet, take one card | Strong starting totals |
| Split | Make two hands from a pair | Pairs such as aces and eights |
Basic strategy in one sentence
Basic strategy is a chart of the mathematically best action for each combination of your total and the dealer face-up card. It reduces the edge but does not remove it. Treat it as a reference you can read off a card, not a secret. Avoid insurance, which is a side bet with a poor return in most versions.
Live tables can differ in blackjack payout, number of decks and doubling restrictions. Read the rules panel before the first hand, since a lower natural payout raises the edge noticeably.
Seat and session management
Many live tables are shared, with players acting in sequence under a time limit. Set your stake so a normal losing run does not end the session early. For a contrast with a no-decision game, read baccarat; for another card table, see Teen Patti. All guides are linked from the live casino hub.
Table etiquette and timing
Live tables give each seat a fixed time to act. If the timer expires, the hand may be stood automatically. Decide your action quickly, but not before you have checked the total and the dealer card. A good habit is to read both numbers aloud in your head, in the same order, every hand.
